For more than 30 years, Ability WA has helped thousands of people with disability, as well as those living with injuries and illnesses, to find meaningful work through its Disability Employment Services team.
Employment is a big part of most of our lives. For people with disability, opportunities to find work can be a challenge and this can have an impact on their overall wellbeing.
Keeping its customers short-term and long-term employment goals central to its approach, Ability WA’s Disability Employment Services team connects with the local business community to uncover supportive work placements.
Ability WA has found that it’s not just jobseekers who benefit from work opportunities, the businesses it works with are finding star performers and enriching their workplace cultures, like Corey Heelan who is a valuable member of the Perth Window & Door Replacement Company.
Mr Heelan joined Ability WA Disability Employment Services as a teenager and, through work experience placements, it was clear he enjoyed working in small operations teams.
In 2021, Ability WA negotiated a factory hand work experience placement for Mr Heelan with Perth Window & Door Replacement Company.
He started with the company and was responsible for cleaning and general workshop duties. It wasn’t long before he proved his work ethic and has now grown into the role of assisting the tradespeople in manufacturing and installing security doors and fly screens.
Ability WA helped Mr Heelan settle into work, supporting him in applying for a tax file number and settling into a work routine for the first time. He is now a confident young man who loves going to work.
“I love working with my team,” Mr Heelan said.
Perth Window & Door Replacement Company Owner Inara Barrowman said Mr Heelan was a valuable employee and the company relied on him to keep certain parts of the business going.
“Corey is a very respectful person and pleasant to work alongside,” she said. “He has taken on more responsibility, supporting a new work experience candidate within our company.”
